I have the benefit, and used to have the handicap, of a scientific training. I don’t believe anything, but have created a tentative and always evolving model of reality. As new evidence came in, my reality progressed from complete scepticism to seeing the Universe as alive, and made of the unconditional Love all the great religions and philosophies describe. 

Janice Dolley’s account of her conversations with her friend Ursula Burton, before and after Lady Burton’s death, fit perfectly into my current model. I cannot treat it as evidence, because it is a personal claim that is only hearsay in the scientific sense, but it is the kind of thing that fits my understanding of Reality. 

If you are open to a more complex yet simple, holistic and sacred view of reality, if you agree with me that death is not the end of a book but the end of a chapter, then Janice’s (and Ursula’s) book will speak to you. 

Add to that the beautiful, clear, lyrical language, and a transparent honesty, and you can enjoy having your eyes opened (or, as with me, your established beliefs confirmed) in a most pleasant way.
All the same, the basic claim of conversations with a dead friend made me entertain the possibility that the book is a cleverly done fantasy. Even if it were, it presents Truth, and joining Janice’s Reality will make you into a better person. However, a simple internet search provided many bits of corroborative evidence, so I am confident that Janice honestly believes her account. As I said, my scientific training prevents me from saying more, but her account is so inspiring that it honestly doesn’t matter."

Janice Dolley is the co-author of The Quest: Exploring a Sense of Soul, Awakening to a New Awareness: Stories of Contemporary Christians and Christian Evolution. Once in a while one reads a book that not only is a wonderful read, but has a magnet drawing a reader into it and fills the mind with at least a bit of wisdom and good sense. The Ferryman's Dream is such a book with one difference: it delivers a good deal more wisdom than one might expect. Often when reading a book one quickly (perhaps all too quickly) dismisses much of what one reads, hastening to get to "the good parts" or even just to finish. Here, the reader cannot but go back and read once again the fully packed package of ideas this work contains.

 

Aside from the story, which itself is joyful to read, ideas emerge right from the very beginning. The author, Dr. Bitkoff, can be recognized as one who has reached a state of consciousness that we call mystical. We see the wisdom begin to flow. Bitkoff quickly notifies us of a flaw almost all of us have. It is that the instructions given by spiritual teachers is often "denied or overlooked". Near the end of the book we are reminded that "while our journey through life is filled with trouble and tears, it is filled also with laughter and joy." Too many of us, too often, forget this and we become cynical, and sadly, not very pleasant to be with. Bitkoff knows well that greatest of all gifts, the gift of mystical insight. He recognizes that even "in the most highly attuned" this gift comes and goes depending upon "the requirements of the situation." If one chooses to become enlightened and to care to reach for that higher, wiser mind, this book will add greatly to reach that goal. Particularly distinctive was Bitkoff's use of brief, wise poetic endings to each of the chapters in the book which actually enlighten the reading mind. One brief example: "This moring as I slept,the sun caressed my lips...then I awoke to brighten the day." The Ferryman's Dream is a must read.

Fathers are so cool, they can be the best person in a child's life....or the worse. It's their choice. Much of it depends on their own bringing up, how they interpret the role of parenthood, especially the role of being the father. Fathers balance the family scales with mothers, giving the children in the nest two places to rely on. From the dawn of history, mothers were the nurturers, consolers, and source of gentle loving confidence. Fathers, on the other hand, provided the means to which the family survived, food, money, shelter, and protection from the outside.

Children, therefore, saw in a father the strength of one beyond their own capacity. The automatic dependence was a source of security that only in the strength of the father could a child even think of venturing outside the cocoon of the mother's nest.

The father's dependence on the mother was also a sign of strength to the children. His love and devotion to their mother impressed upon their children that strength is a sign of wisdom when it can bow down to dependence and devotion to another.

In August (2010), at the Catholic Media Network and Catholic Writer's Conference Live event in Philly, I was able to meet just such a father in Deacon Steve. He and his daughter, Karina, wrote a book together sharing their history and growth in their belief and dependence in God. "Why God Matters," is a compilation of experiences and life lessons that both brought them closer together and instilled in them that God is there for them at each and every corner of their lives. Both are a complete delight and without saying a word are beacons of hope for those around them in God. Just by their actions, you can tell they have joy in their hearts and hope on their sleeves. They know God and God knows them.

Meeting them both, I can see that Karina is the person she is because of her father's role in her life. Deacon Steve has truly been a devoted father to both his daughters and completely devoted to their mother. Yes, trials followed him throughout their family life, but it never dimmed their love for God, on the contrary, it strengthened their awareness of His presence.

The stories in their book will make you laugh, cry, and even give you an "Ah ha" moment through their life lessons section following each chapter. I loved the book and went away from reading it with the wide-open message that fatherhood is so imperative to a child's psyche and security. Karina is blessed and Deacon Steve is a blessing.

I know Karina Fabian best from her speculative fiction–tales of dragon detectives, spacefaring nuns, superhero misfits, and zombie cookery, filled with engaging characters, sly puns, and wry observations on human nature. While her faith informs all her writing (her tagline is “Fiction, Faith, and Fun”), that faith is front-and-center in this very non-fiction collaboration with her father, Steven Lumbert, a Catholic deacon.

There’s still plenty of fun. Why God Matters is primarily a devotional guide, in the spirit of Brother Lawrence’s The Practice of the Presence of God, but it’s also a personal memoir and meditation on the joys and challenges of life, shared by a father and daughter who love each other very much.

The book provides a series of topical meditations, “life lessons,” each with a scripture passage, an excerpt from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a pertinent quotation that summarizes the chapter’s main idea, and a vignette from Karina or Steven.

The vignettes are what really bring this book to life. Karina and Steven share some very personal moments when they’ve recognized God’s presence and intervention in their lives. Sometimes it happens in something as simple as a shared family meal or the give-and-take of a relationship with a friend. Sometimes it’s a life-changing incident, a momentous decision, or a miraculous answer to prayer. These are situations we all encounter, and it’s encouraging to read these accounts of how God met Steven and Karina there and strengthened their faith in the process. As they note in the introduction,

The stories you’ll find here are ordinary, because quite often, we find our faith in the day-to-day living. After all, what could be more ordinary than taking a step—or a breath? Yet, as St. Patrick said, “Christ’s breath in mine.”

This book is written from a Catholic viewpoint with a Catholic audience in mind. I think, though, that any Christian reader would enjoy and benefit from the insights it offers, which transcend sectarian borders. Protestant Evangelical Fred certainly gained a renewed appreciation of how important it is to be aware that God is working in my life every day, and of my corresponding need to respond to that work and cooperate with Him in my spiritual development, becoming more like Him, and participating in the divine nature. That’s what being a Christian, a disciple of Jesus Christ, is all about.

It’s not complicated, but it takes commitment, and you’ve got to keep your head in the game. In its glimpses of one family’s faith journey, Why God Matters illustrates many practical ways to cultivate a daily walk with God. It’s helpful, it’s inspiring, and it’s heartwarming. A great combination, and well worth reading.

It's long been known that psychedelic substances expand normal functions and perceptions of the brain. Psychedelic use isn't a recent phenomenon. In fact, virtually every culture on every continent over eons has ingested consciousness-altering plants and used them medicinally and in rituals.

 

But many readers would be surprised to learn that Nobel Laureate Francis Crick received a vision of the double helix DNA when he was under the influence of LSD, or that late Apple founder Steve Jobs counts his psychedelic voyages among the "two or three most important things" he's done in his life.

 

Despite the fact that the federal government shut down psychedelic research some 45 years ago and made its use illegal, 23 million Americans have taken a psychedelic since then, and it's estimated that more than 600 thousand Americans will try psychedelics this year.

 

Today, there's a recent resurgence of scientific and medical research on the healing potential of psychedelics. Important clinical research on psychedelics is being conducted at Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and elsewhere that may offer new hope and help for cancer patients, cluster headache sufferers, heroin addicts, US veterans with PTSD, autistic children, and patients with many other medical conditions. Delightful reading! It took me exactly 110 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace. Superb flow, easy understanding, and a powerful message.

It was indeed a thrilling experience to go through the book Inner Pilgrimage: Ten Days to a Mindful Me by Raji Lukkoor.

The flow of thoughts, the choice of words, the lucid description of the ten-day vipassana meditation retreat – it kind of transported me into that very place where her pilgrimage and the events that followed, unfolded. I could sense the vibrations in me as I went through the chapters. Raji came to the retreat as an ordinary citizen seeking a calmer, more centered existence. Who knew that vipassana meditation could help her transform her inner chaos into an inner calm?

The articulacy is perfect. Raji sure knows how to capture the attention and imagination of her readers with her eloquence of the English language, as well as her experience of discovering the realms and rewards of vipassana meditation.

I was penning an article for my staff on Leadership and was looking for words to complete the write-up. Believe me, I found close to 200 words that I was looking for, and those very words have enriched my own thought-flow in the said article.

I look forward to the sequel of the book.

As a student of life, I find the title Maestro very interesting. The word Maestro is a title of extreme respect given to a master musician or a master in an artistic field, usually someone who listens with their mind’s eyes and ears; much like this author, historian, healer, and clairvoyant , Rachel Madorsky.

I like the image of mankind given by Trifonov’s novel, The Other Life, that our human destinies resemble threads. …and that human beings do not give in to death because they have an inborn sense of the infinite threads.

Rachel is also a historian who studies how we are destined to meet the same loved ones, relatives or friends over and over again. She tells us, “If we develop the skills and understanding to access the information about our karma and past lives, we are forewarned; and we may be able to correct many things that seem otherwise impossible to change.”

There is a growing audience today of all ages, who are not afraid of openly exploring the Unknown. The words “Know Thyself” keeps us all questioning why we were born…what is our purpose for living…and whether we will be rewarded or punished this time around?

Rachel‘s many patients seem to absorb her words, her energy, her electric wellness. Her book is kind of a diary packed with information to back up her beliefs. Her patients use her warmth, energy and clairvoyance for healing their healing.

Many of us wonder why some preach, some teach, and some kill? To the questions can we beat our DNA or outfox our Karma, Rachel warns us that Karma is similar to a gun shot; once the bullet is fired, its consequences cannot be controlled. (much like our tongue).

Abraham Lincoln’s quote at the beginning of her book says, “I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me.” Rachel's one-on-one healing has given her insight into a world most of us know very little about.

My hope would be others do not fear their destiny but invest in their souls by studying Rachel’s books, Maestro, Create Your Own Destiny and Symphony of Your Karma. I have been privileged to read and write reviews for all three you can find here on Authorsden.com.

Simplifying the Bible

Bible Wisdom for Modern Times:

Do you find Bibles somewhat daunting and off-putting? I know I do. The first problem is the sheer size of the book. My "Revised Standard Version" has 2,024 pages, with a double column of type on each page. The next hurdle is the way the text is set up with paragraphs as long as freight trains and all these idiotic numerals and numbers inserted into the text. I even have one Bible, "The Jerusalem Bible", which not content with one set of numbers disfiguring the text and making it difficult to read, has TWO sets running down the margin in places. In the story of Daniel and the Lions, for example, you get this progression: 2,1,3,2,4,3,5,4,6,5,7,6... For heaven's sakes! The final hurdle is the language. All this "thou sayest" and "wherewithal purposed forasmuch handstaves" (the last two words aren't even in the Dictionary)! What I've always wanted is a selection from the Bible of important material relevant to my life that's not only easy to read and understand but that sings to my soul. I've attempted to supply just that in "Bible Wisdom for Modern Times."

Note: I agree with the author that most Bibles were not written for ordinary people and the mechanics of searching and deciphering its wisdom can be so displeasing; many are disheartened enough to give up quickly. This book is smooth and easy reading and the wisdom is very clear. I find it interesting Wisdom is referred to as "Her." God is referenced as (He).


In the back of this 117-Page Bible of Wisdoms is a Chapter of Notes. Chapter One, begins with the wisdom of love goodness, virtue and doing right...He (God) quickly reveals His mind to men and women whose intentions are honest and who really put their trust in Him...


Distrusting the Lord God, in fact, is the very thing that separates men and women from God...Whether you believe in God or not, most believe if we look for good we will find good. If we look for bad, we will find sinners committing wickedness...

Wisdom is referred to as a kindly Spirit who loves all mankind...ending with...It was the works and words of ungodly and misguided men that called death into existence...

These fools considered death their friend. They pined for it. They made a covenant with it because they were not fit to take their place in heaven.


Note: We're living in a war torn world and the last line in this scripture speaks to me of all those who call death into existence...killing and maiming, rather than seeding and nurturing.


Chapter Six, begins with:

Wickedness, if unchecked, can lay waste the whole earth,
Evil-doing overturn even the thrones of might rulers.
If a storm of anarchy is allowed to rise against them,
Like a tempest, it will winnow them away.

Note: Unfortunately, wickedness is contagious...and the longer it goes unchecked, the more wicked it becomes; the last line in this Chapter reads...Wisdom reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other. And She orders all things well.

I really enjoyed this fable-script about King Darius of Persia, the story begins when three guardsmen suggest a riddle for their King's favor.

"Let us propose a riddle...such as What is the strongest force in the world? The winner receiving title of King's Special Friend and Kinsman with many rewards."

The first Hesiod played to the King's ego, naming the King. He is your overlord and rules over all.

Maximus proposed that alcohol was the strongest force in the world.

Zrubar, the third, proposed and won, that "for Truth lives and rules forever....truth never fails, Truth endures, Truth is just...Blessed by the God of Truth!"

The Psalms were always my favorites because they were the easiest to read. This Psalms Six was about Trust; Psalm Nine was about Mercy; Psalm Eleven, was about Deliverance and Psalm Fifteen was about Help in Distress.

In Song of Solomon my favorite line is, ...There are many things about kingship that affront a poet's sense of beauty.

Note: Gods never die. Sinners deserve to die...

O Lord God of all,
Truly blessed is the man who trusts in You!

Proverbs begins with...Do you wish to acquire knowledge
And a deep understanding of the ways of God and man?
Then seek out Wisdom
Praise Her and proclaim Her!


I find this book very simple and inspiring to those who fear the time and commitment it takes to tackle any Bible. Love that springs from a pure heart, a clear conscious and real faith (not sham faith or pretending faith)....

Many of us would like to be known as "wise and learned teachers of the Law, like John Howard Reid, the author, but so many of us haven't the faintest idea how to begin!

Smooth and easy reading. Beautiful pictures. Uncomplicated design and text.

Walking Thorough Illusion features a group of short stories about people in the Bible who had some association or awareness of Jesus. As a person who is not in any way drawn to conventional religion, I was at first skeptical regarding any value this book might bring to me. However, since it was recommended to me I decided to keep an open mind as I began reading it.


It took just a couple of chapters for me to get really drawn into this work. The author very creatively sets up each chapter (or story) as a fictional conversation between herself and Jesus about a particular topic, (e.g., obstacles, morality, approval, curiosity, death, time), but the content is by no means dogmatic in any way. I must admit I was very impressed the way in which the author was able to effectively distill the essence of the teachings of Jesus in a very practical, non-religious manner. In summary, I found this book to be very well-written, and both inventive and highly thought-provoking. I highly recommend it as a spiritual and personal growth resource. Here's one of my favorite passages from it:

"I believe that God is a power within - not a power that is only met upon death. If that's true, it simplifies things, don't you think? No more dialogues about whose God is valid and whose God is not since every soul is equally valid. No more wars in the name of God since God is you, me, and everyone. No more posturing that God told me to do this and God told me to say that since God isn't separate from the speaker. No more worries about taking the name of God in vain since you might as well be cursing yourself. No more religions claiming that they have the one true path, since every path that offers a person love is the path of true redemption. No more guilt for breaking God's rules since the rules we have are the ones we've given ourselves."
